In Children’s Fixed Layout ePub for the iPad – Part 9, you were shown in a video how to use Audacity to narrate your eBook and how to make the .smil file so it would be a “read aloud book” on the iPad.

The toc.ncx file is for the navigation in your fixed layout ePub:

And how you get the above thumbnails to show up in your Children’s fixed layout ePub is by using this generic toc.ncx file:

And the reason it only has one NavMap point is because that’s what Apple recommends under Table of Contents in the iBookstore Asset guide 5.0 PDF:

However, the list table of contents is not very helpful with a short picture book and may be suppressed for those books. To suppress the list table of contents, include only one navPoint in the toc.ncx <navMap> block — the thumbnail table of contents will still be available.

Now let’s go through the toc.ncx file section by section. What’s in red is not changed and what’s blue and bolded will be changed for your fixed layout ePub.

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>
<!DOCTYPE ncx PUBLIC “-//NISO//DTD ncx 2005-1//EN” “”>
<ncx xmlns=”” version=”2005-1″ xml:lang=”en”>

Everything is in red so just copy and paste the above into your text editor.

<meta name=”dtb:uid” content=”put ISBN here“/>
<meta name=”dtb:depth” content=”1″/>
<meta name=”dtb:totalPageCount” content=”0″/>
<meta name=”dtb:maxPageNumber” content=”0″/>

What’s blue and bolded above (ISBN Number) should be changed in your eBook after you copy and paste this under what you put in your text editor before.

Now comes the title information for your Children’s fixed layout ePub.

<text>Your Title Here</text>

Change the blue to the title of your eBook.

<navPoint id=”navPoint-1″ playOrder=”1″>
<content src=”page01.xhtml“/>

Where it says “Start” I put a shortened name of “Wunk Home” in mine and also, put where my Children’s story should begin.

And finally you close out your toc.ncx file with this:

The toc.ncx file doesn’t need anything else for the thumbnails to show up at the bottom of your fixed layout ePub.
