Writing is a business

I am so sick of Authors saying “I just want to write and don’t want to deal with all that other stuff like marketing.

Excuse me, but Writing is a Business!

If you want writing as a career where you get to stay home and make a comfortable living then you better rethink your attitude.

In the real world, it’s up to you to “wear different hats” in your writing career.

The first hat you wear is, of course, writing.

That’s a given. And you better be good at it or, if you’re not, you’d better get good at it.

Nobody writes a perfect book the first time.

If they say they did, they’re either lying or don’t take into the fact, they’ve been scribbling words on paper since they were two. Which means they built up their writing muscle and now, on their first book, their years of practice burst forth.

For the rest of us who didn’t start until later in life, we became good because we sat our butt in a chair and wrote everyday until we were satisfied with our ability (a/k/a voice).

Marketing is the second hat in your writing career.

Should you use a pen name?

If you’re going to write a multitude of ebooks in different areas (genres), then you should consider writing under several pen name(s).

Writers used pen name(s) for hundreds of years for the following reasons:

  1. Women Authors didn’t want their gender to “prejudice” the reader
  2. Even today, women Authors will either use their initials and or use a male pen name. An example would be “J.K. Rowling.” Why did she choose to have this as her pen name?

5 Tips for writing non-fiction ebooks

Instead of writing a 200 page non-fiction ebook that puts everything you know into it, you need to tone it down to the 25 to 50 page ebook that presents only one problem and gives a focused solution.

We are living in the information age and what this means is everybody and their sister is being bombarded with a ton of information. I just read “there is more information being put out on a monthly basis than all the information written from the beginning of time to 2003.” Whoa, that’s mind boggling.

So what people need is not more information but “focused” information in your non-fiction ebook. The kind they can read, digest and put into action in a couple of hours.

So that means my friend, your non-fiction ebook should be short, sweet and to the point.

So what does a short, sweet, concise non-fiction ebook look like?
